 Singapore notch first SEA Games win

The Singapore Under-23 Men's Football team recorded their first victory in the 26th edition of the SEA Games with a 2-1 win over Cambodia.

Forwards Khairul Nizam and Nigel Vanu got their names on the score sheets, as Singapore cemented their first win of the tournament despite facing strong opposition in the shape of a defensive Cambodian outfit at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia

With a goalless draw in their opening match against Malaysia two days ago, the Young Lions certainly had their scoring boots on, as they took the pitch against the Cambodians, and score they did.

The Young Lions showed the hunger and tenacity that was missing from their first game against the Young Tigers, right from the kick-off. They laid siege on the Cambodian goalmouth early and were awarded three corner-kicks in quick succession as Cambodia struggled with the height of the players, but Singapore failed to capitalise on any of those chances.

Cambodia was the first to threaten with a chance in the 11th minute when Cambodian striker, Sos Suhana found space in the box but thanks to the quick feet of Safuwan Baharudin, the Young Lions defender managed to make a last-ditched tackle to keep the score level.

Midfielder, Fazli Ayob then tested the Cambodian goalkeeper, Sou Yaty, with a thunderous shot, from 40 yards out, but his shot went just beyond the post.

Another chance came for Singapore in the 16th minute, when skipper, Hariss Harun, released winger, Gabriel Quak down the left, but the winger's cross went across the Cambodian goalmouth with no one at the end of it to tap the ball home.

The Young Lions had a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute, when Shahdan released Gabriel and sent him through on goal. But his left-foot shot was tipped over the bar by the Cambodian keeper.

Khairul Nizam wasted another chance in the 28th minute when he missed-kick a shot just metres away from the goal and the ball went straight to the arms of the relieved Cambodian keeper, and it was another chance gone begging.
